Overtaking maneuvers on rural single-carriageway roads represent one of the most critical sources of head-on collision risk due to limited passing sight distance (PSD) and opposing-lane exposure. This study investigates driver gap acceptance behavior and PSD characteristics under real traffic conditions using field video observations collected on rural undivided highways. A total of 214 overtaking maneuvers were extracted and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, linear regression, and logistic regression modeling. The results demonstrated a significant inverse relationship between operational speeds and accepted overtaking gap, indicating adaptive driver risk-tolerance behavior at higher travel speeds. The developed regression model showed a strong positive relationship between speed and required passing sight distance ( =0.73), expressed as PSD=182.4+3.05V. The findings further revealed that many observed overtaking maneuvers were completed using shorter passing distances than those recommended by AASHTO guidelines, particularly under high-speed conditions. The study contributes to transportation safety research by integrating overtaking behavior, gap acceptance, and PSD analysis within a unified behavioral framework specifically focused on rural single-carriageway roads. The outcomes provide important implications for behavior-aware highway safety assessment and intelligent overtaking assistance systems.
